German minister seeks to intensify Asia, Pacific ties on 5-day trip

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is set to embark on a five-day trip to South-East Asia and the Pacific region as he seeks to deepen alliances with countries including Australia and New Zealand to counterbalance US and Chinese dominance. At a time when power politics threaten to replace the strength of the law, "we must expand our global network of robust partnerships along our core interests," Germany's top diplomat said before embarking on the long-haul journey.
