Tsunami evacuations ordered in South America after 8.8 earthquake, but worst risk appears to pass for US

Wednesday's quake off Russia appeared to be the strongest recorded since the 9.0 magnitude event off Japan in 2011. In the US, tsunami advisories for the coasts of Oregon and Washington were lifted, but held for Hawaii and parts of Alaska and California. Meanwhile, new alerts along South America's West Coast forced evacuations.
