Watch: How did the Houthis rise to power?

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed they fired ballistic missiles at Israel amid the ongoing West Asia conflict. Israel said the missiles were intercepted. The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, are a Zaydi Shia rebel group that emerged in northern Yemen in the 1990s. They took control of the capital, Sana’a, in 2014 and currently control large parts of the country. The group has been engaged in conflict with a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Since late 2023, the Houthis have also targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea, a key global trade route.
